COLLEGE:
- Mike started 43 consecutive games at the University of Western Ontario, including the “Friendship Game” in Osaka, Japan against the Kansai All-Star team
- Was part of Western’s 1994 Vanier Cup Championship team that defeated the University of Saskatchewan in one of the most thrilling games in the history of the sport.
- Played his final amateur game at Husky Stadium in the 1998 Churchill Bowl versus the University of Saskatchewan
- Finished 5 year career with the mighty Mustangs with a 46-7-2 record including 1 Churchill Bowl, 1 Atlantic Bowl, 3 Yates Cups, 1 Vanier Cup and another Vanier Cup appearance and was also named a Conference All Star 3 times.
- Was drafted in the 5th round, 32nd overall in the 1999 CFL draft by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
PRO:
- Was the surprise of training camp when he earned a spot on the Bomber practice roster
- Played first CFL game October 10, 1999 versus Hamilton
- Started at right guard for Winnipeg in 2000 before breaking his leg against Toronto in week 10
- Started 16 of 20 games in 2001 including starts at left tackle for the Eastern Final and Grey Cup games
- In 2002 was one of first players signed by GM Eric Tillman to the roster of the expansion Ottawa Renegades, and was a pillar on the ‘gades O-line for the next 3 years
- 2005 saw Mike re-sign with Winnipeg where he was re united with his former O-line coach Mike Gibson
- Was named CFL lineman of the week in week 5 against Montreal when he helped RB Charles Roberts gain 199 yards rushing while not allowing a sack
- In 2005 and 2006 Mike anchored a Bomber offensive line that gave up second fewest sacks in the CFL while leading the way for Roberts to lead the league in rushing for consecutive seasons
- In 2007 Mike moved his family to Regina to fulfill his childhood dream- winning a Grey Cup and being on one of the greatest teams of all time
- 2008 saw Mike go back to work in the financial services industry with Investors Group while having another dominating season on the grid iron.
- 2009 winner of the Frontier-Peterbilt Community Service Award that was voted on by his team mates.
PERSONAL:
- Mike and his stunning wife Kathie are native Torontonians who live in Saskatchewan year round with their beautiful 4 year old daughter, Myia, and 1 year old son Kailem.
- Myia was born in Winnipeg, a bomber fan, but quickly and effortlessly made the transition into Rider Nation; while Kailem was born in Regina and although he is only 1 he will soon out weigh the entire Riders O-Line.
- The Abou-Mechrek’s continue their inter provincial diversity and share their home with their 2 dogs Disco, a boarder collie-husky from Nunivut, and Jazmine, a great dane- Rottweiler from Quebec.
- Mike is greatly involved in the community promoting literacy through the Fine Food’s Community Youth Challenge, as well as promoting environmental sustainability through the Riders Green Zone initiative
- Mike is also passionate about the Humane Society where he got his 2 best friends
